Bronze Kpeliye’e Mask

DESCRIPTION

This striking bronze Senufo mask is a kpeliye’e model from the Ivory Coast; a captivating piece of traditional African art, worn by members of the Senufo Poro secret society during dances and meetings. It features the general characteristics of the kpeliye’e; a fine geometric patterned face, slit eyes, long nose, and a pointed jaw with protruding legs. The face is decorated with small incisions and representations of keloid scarifications. The sides of the face are decorated with numerous small eminences in geometric form, beautifully detailing a serene expression. The top of the mask is adorned with an elegant female figure, while the bottom of the mask bears a pair or “legs”.

The Senufo who live across the Ivory Coast, Mali and Burkina Faso are governed by a council of elders, the Poro society, and a religious foundation principle deeply rooted in nature and ancestors worship. This is a symbolic representation that’s carried through these masks and their other artworks. Senufo spirituality emphasizes a connection with ancestors. They believe that ancestors play an active role in the lives of the living, providing guidance and protection. Nature is deeply revered, and the Senufo view it as imbued with spiritual significance. Many rituals and ceremonies are tied to agricultural cycles, reflecting their dependence on the land. Kpeliyee masks serve not only as artistic expressions but also as vital tools for maintaining social cohesion, educating younger generations, and preserving the Senufo belief system. They embody the community’s values and are integral to their identity.
