DESCRIPTION

Part of the series Past, Present, and Future Africa (2023), Past Africa reflects on cultural identity before colonial disruption. The portrait of a young African woman, adorned in traditional attire, is set against vibrant geometric forms inspired by patterns found in African textiles and design traditions. Through bold color and symbolic composition, the work celebrates the richness, creativity, and visual language that have long defined African societies.

Rather than simply looking backward, the piece invites viewers to reconsider how Africa’s past is remembered and represented. In doing so, it participates in a broader effort of reclaiming and decolonizing the narrative, placing African heritage, knowledge, and aesthetics at the center of its own story.

Past Africa honors the generations whose traditions, values, and artistic expressions shaped the cultural foundations of the continent. At once reflective and celebratory, the work recognizes the past as a source of strength, identity, and inspiration for the future.
