Why Must it Always Be A Face
DESCRIPTION
“Why Must it Always Be a Face” Acrylic on Canvas: This painting exists in the space between construction and collapse, identity and reinvention. At the center, a figure emerges from a storm of color and gesture, appearing neither fully human nor fully symbolic, but rather as a living archive of experiences, memories, wounds, and transformations.
The fractured face functions as a visual map of the self. One side retains traces of order and recognition, while the other reveals a skeletal, almost mask-like anatomy, suggesting the simultaneous presence of what we choose to show and what remains hidden beneath the surface. Rather than depicting destruction, the exposed forms speak to vulnerability; the idea that true identity is often discovered through exposure rather than concealment.
The smaller figure embedded within the larger body introduces a generational or psychological dimension. An inner child, an ancestral spirit, a memory carried forward, or the multiple selves that coexist within every individual. Together they suggest that identity is never singular; we are composites of inherited histories, personal experiences, and evolving beliefs.
The vibrant palette refuses stillness. Explosive yellows, electric blues, and organic greens create an atmosphere of continual movement and growth. The surrounding environment appears almost jungle-like, evoking nature as a force of renewal, while the energetic drips and splashes record the physical act of painting itself. These marks become evidence of process, reminding the viewer that becoming is often messy, unpredictable, and unfinished.
At its core, the painting is a meditation on human complexity. It challenges the notion of a fixed identity and instead presents the self as something layered, fragmented, and continuously evolving. Beauty emerges not from perfection or symmetry, but from the coexistence of contradiction; strength and fragility, memory and imagination, chaos and coherence.
No brushes were used in the making of this work. Acrylic paint was manipulated directly onto the surface, resulting in a rich and heavily textured image that captures both spontaneity and control. Made in Maboneng, South Africa.
